INDIAN PUBLIC HEALTHCARE CRISIS

India is a union of twenty-eight state and seven union territories, with population of approximately 1.32 billion .India's central government and state governments are empowered to regulate health related issues.with such a big population we stand as world second biggest population we are 17.9% of the world's total population .Managing such a substantial populations healthcare is a burdensome task which has to be managed by the Govt of India with a constitutional division of legislative responsibility between the central government and the states. Both the central government are constitutionally empowered to legislate on matters of public health. The union law takes care of the law with port quarantine, which includes seamen's and marine hospitals.State law takes care for matters in connection with public health and sanitation, hospitals and dispensaries.

Healthcare is a pre-eminent requirement for the citizen of every nation, unfortunately when it comes to medical services, particularly in rural areas(70% of entire population of india) lags medical attention .Providing quality healthcare to rural population is a vital, but highly overlooked issue in the developing India.Rural healthcare in india faces a crisis unmatched by any other sector of the economy, a drastic change came into picture in year 2005,the central govt launched the National rural health mission(NRHM)under which it proposed to increase public expenditure on health as a proportion of the GDP to 3% from 1%.

India, the world's most populous democracy, has struggled and still struggling with establishing Emergency Medical service (EMS) for all sections of society.Prosperously,in recent years, the emergency medical service scenario in urban india has undergone a major transfiguration and there are now innumerable hospitals, increasing and responsive ambulance services, and improved medical facilities available in metropolitan cities.
When it comes to healthcare in rural India, the challenges to set up robust Emergency medical services, the lack of access to theses basic facilities have proven to be disastrous.the challenge mainly faced by the rural healthcare sector are low quality of care, poor accountability, lack of awareness, limited access to facilities, distance become barrier, limited manpower and reluctant community participation. In India ,there is one government allopathic doctor for every 10,189 people, one government hospital bed for every 2,046 people and one state run hospital for every 90,343 people which is a terrifying data what actually people are facing in some situations patients have even seen sharing bed's which is improper as far is health hygiene and infection is a major threat.

     LET'S QUESTION  :

-The major question arises here is are we prepared for emergency services in the forefront ?

-Are we prepared for situation like some natural calamities and outbreaks are we well equipped ?

Major Issues to be resolved on priority basis

  • Women and child care speciality hospitals should be increased in number of maternity care hospitals where early sign of any misfortune condition can be detected in early stage of pregnancy ,Infant mortality rates(IMR) should be frequently checked as they are the key area and consistent decline in IMR has been recorded which is a positive sign.
  • Sanitation and hygiene is a issue which need to be addressed in even in major metropolitan cities no proper garbage recycling has been started in India till now which is a need of an hour .
  •  Every doctors need to be trained to deal with situations like outbreaks and epidemic situations in that way we will be prepared for the worse situations.
  • People should be more encouraged to visit Government hospitals and more number of Tertiary care government hospitals should be increased which increases the faith of people that good care can also be imparted by govt hospitals.
  • Rural populations should be able to appropriately and confidently access services such as primary care, dental care, behavioural health ,emergency care, and public health services.
  • Frequent healthcare camps must be arranged for every village on every quarterly biases which helps to keep track on people health.

This crisis situation should be taken in a very serious way as we as India being among asian superpower we should be well equipped prior for situations to deal with virus outbreak, chemical outbreaks which can be deadly .Our government has taken many steps to eradicate many such problems and has excel in it example polio ,smallpox, leprosy, and recent decline in child mortality rate under age 5 is remarkable in the way of healthcare evolution.
